Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 17:03:30 -0400 From: Dan Jacobs Subject: WebTech Tues 9/21 7pm at IBM SPC Hi everybody, and welcome to the new fall season. This month's meeting is on the 21st (sorry about the late notice). The meeting will be hosted by IBM at the SPC in Waltham, and will begin at 7pm. Directions and details can be found at the group web-site (http://www.acm.org/chapters/webtech). Our guest presentation will be given by Reed Shilts from Sybase/Powersoft on Enterprise Java Beans. This is sure to be a terrific talk with plenty of technical content without the hype, from one of our own members! We will also have an election (here's your chance to get rid of me) and we'll talk a little about our relationship with the New England Java Users Group (NEJug). I hope to see you there! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: EJBs - What they are and How to make them Abstract: >From a programmer - not a marketing person! The architecture and details of Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) both from the component side (server) and client usage will be presented. To show the cross-vendor promise of EJBs, the sample EJB and client we create will be executed on servers from both WebLogic and Sybase. "I will NOT have a marketing handler with me and I will NOT spend my time talking about wonderful Sybase products (even though I'll be using PowerJ for my EJB programming)." "If I have time I'd like to show using an EJB from a servlet - but that may be a sinkhole because I'd have to explain what a servlet is. I may just use the remaining time comparing EJB technology to MTS (kinda a mixed metaphor because EJB is a technology vs. MTS the product)." Bio: Even though he has a Masters in Physics, Reed has spent most of the last 25 years programming on everything from mainframes to embedded systems. Currently a programmer at Sybase/Powersoft, he recently added the EJB 1.0 support to Sybase's "PowerJ" (that version is now in beta). Reed is typically involved the OLE/COM/MTS and CORBA support in "PowerBuilder", a 4GL programming environment. A past leader of the Boston Computer Society's "Component Software" SIG and a past active member in the "Visual Basic" SIG he is now spending his spare time with his wife, nine cats, and video editing. ------------------------------ Dan Jacobs, President Tech Tonic Netsystems email: djacobs@ttonic.com Burlington, MA voice: (781) 273-5825, (781) 273-0231 Java Consulting fax: (781) 273-5825 Object-Oriented Software Engineering Chairman Boston ACM WebTech Group: http://www.acm.org/chapters/webtech
