Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 09:28:15 -0400 From: JB Subject: neSOFTdev June News Event: neSOFTdev June Meeting When: June 8, 6:30 p.m. Where: Cafeteria at Prospect Place * Ground Floor * 9 Hillside Ave., Waltham, MA, 128/90, Exit 27a Contact: JohnBarrie@compuserve.com, www.BTDnet.com/neSOFTdev 1. Regular Meeting 2. Windows 2000, Linux 3. Peter Coad 4. 1999-2000 5. Addison-Wesley & O'Reilly 6. Good Stuff 7. My Apologies 8. Feedback 1. 6:30 p.m. -- Andy Novick has indicated that he would like to continue the VB Internet Application theme. It works out (IMHO) that the VB Internet solution is more suitable for Intranet/Extranet solutions so the neSOFTdev site will remain as is until another solution comes to mind. Nonetheless, this is good stuff to know. It's fun and very much the foundation for commercial opportunities. Besides, Andy is a really good presenter and knows his stuff. Join us. 7:30 p.m. -- I will do a "lite" highlight of Eckel's "Thinking in Java". Let me know if you want some air time. 8:30 p.m. -- 1999-2000 Planning 8:45 p.m. --Off for the summer months as in "See you in September" 2. There are a lot of good things happening in the Office 2000 space regarding Internet Application development. Anyone like to run a meeting or two on this? The Linux market is really heating up. Could you organize a session on development tools on this platform? IBM and others are moving rapidly into this space so you will have some exciting tools to look at. And, neSOFTdev is a LUG (Linux Users Group). Boy, take a look at our credentials now - neSOFTdev -- UG, MUG, JUG, & LUG. 3. Boy, I didn't leave Waltham until 12:30 a.m. I really thank Peter for spending so much time with us He did not do a commercial thing so I need to do a plug here. TogetherJ is discounted heavily for developers. If you are in the market for a design tool, consulting or training then www.oi.com should be your first stop. You will see more of this tool as I plan on using it in the 1999-2000 season. 4. What we will be doing so far: (1) Hopefully Andy and thus VB will still be with us. (2) Java training sessions at each meeting. Development will most likely be on the Linux platform. Hopefully, TogetherJ will be our design tool. Check out the screen saver on Redhat 6.0. Be careful though. I started watching it and forgot I was supposed to get some work done. Well, that is not totally true as I took out 32 Mb of ram from the Linux box to meet the Windows 2000 requirements for another machine, so I was watching and installing at the same time. It is impressive and it just keeps on running! 5. Both of these publishers support user groups. We have a discount but I lost the codes. Please think of them when purchasing books. 6. We have some good stuff to raffle. A Microsoft Java compiler, several Swing Tutorial CDs from Addison-Wesley and a voucher for a free MindQ Developer Training for Java series course. I have one voucher to raffle off per meeting. May other vendors be so wise. Check out www.mindq.com for details as I heard the courses are terrific. You get to support us and possibly win a great prize all at the same time. 7. I apologize up front for not getting back to you if we were in discussions. The latest update of Win98 trashed my machine and active email. So please get back to me if we were up to something. 8. I am in the planning stages for next year -- OUR 10th ANNIVERSARY! Send me an email letting me know how we are doing so far and what you would like to do. Please step up to do some planning or give your two cents at the next meeting.
