Dec. 8 Date: Tuesday, November 30, 1999 7:24 PM SIGGRAPH/Boston Meeting Announcement Lenni Armstrong & Bren Bataclan Creative Review Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999 at GTE Labs (auditorium), Waltham, MA - Lenni Armstrong - Lenni Armstrong founded The Hatchery Animation in 1988. The studio designs and produces 2D animation for CD-ROM, video, and the web, specializing in character animation. The company creates interactive storybooks, character guides, animated logos and scientific animation. Lenni appears in the 1999 Who's Who in Media and Communications and the 1999 Who's Who of American Women. In this presentation, Lenni will discuss her design process by highlighting three different projects: two commercial projects and one personal. First she'll present the design process for character animation, specifically the steps involved in the storyboarding, animating and production of the KeyKids animated logo for CD-ROM. Next will be the process for a scientific interactive Flash animation, featuring a project for a drug company, SmithKline Beecham. The animation appears as a part of the website promoting a drug used in the treatment of Type II diabetes (http://www.avandia.com/02-howworks-flash1.html). Lastly, Lenni will present the process she uses to create her personal animation, which she calls "Zen and the Art of the Flipbook". She gets her creative juices flowing by drawing with pencils or magic markers in a flipbook on a lightbox, in a stream-of-consciousness way. Her video of flipbook animation features music by Ken Field and Michael Gelfand. - Bren Bataclan - Bren Bataclan has an extensive professional and educational background in both computer animation and graphic design. He has worked for computer graphics firms (multimedia and special effects) in California, has taught computer arts at colleges in New England, and has been a freelance designer, illustrator and animator since the late eighties. Currently, he is part of Viant's creative think tank lab in Boston, where he applies his design and computer graphics skills in research based projects. He also regularly participates in gallery exhibit showings, both nationally and abroad. Bren acted as President of a Filipino-based art organization in Boston called Filamarts. For this SIGGRAPH presentation, Bren will describe his creative process and approach; discuss his transitions from print to 3D and from design to fine arts and vice versa; and talk about his experiences working on projects with non-artists--while at the same time showcasing his portfolio.
