The BASE procedures group (IPD) at SAS Institute has been hard at work adding new and useful features to the heart of the SAS System. This talk describes this work and uses generic "business oriented" examples to place these features in a context that demonstrates their use in everyday programming. Covered are: - New SUMMARY/TABULATE options like percentiles, independent ordering of class variables, and the preloading of the class-variable space using formats and/or datasets - The ODS statement for producing output datasets and HTML output from All SAS procedures, High-Fidelity Printing and more - New and improved SAS Software features like longer variable names, architecture-independent SAS Datasets and cleaner access to tables in other databases. Paul Kent has been a SAS User for almost 20 years and has worked for SAS Institute far longer than he thought he'd hold any single job. Previous contributions to SAS Software include PROC SQL; the WHERE Clause and TCP/IP connectivity. Currently Paul manages the developers responsible for ODS and the majority of BASE SAS Procedures. ----------------------------------------------------------- "Getting Stylish with Version 7 Base Reporting" Sandy McNeill, SAS Institute, Inc. The Version 7 Output Delivery System [ODS] style feature is a powerful new way to customize visual aspects of SAS output. The REPORT and TABULATE procedures have been enhanced to permit direct manipulation of styles governing various regions of a report. This paper demonstrates techniques for creating eye-catching and informative HTML reports, such as traffic lighting, row banding, and hyperlinking. Sandy McNeill is a Software Developer in the Applications Division where her primary responsibility is the care and feeding of PROC REPORT. Sandy has worked at SAS Institute for 3 years - previously she worked with embedded software design and development at the Square D Company ----------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- SAS Classes in September ----------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- Robert Virgile Associates will be offering two courses in September: Introduction to SAS, September 28-29, 1998 This is a two-day course that covers the basics of SAS. The pace is designed for programmers and sophisticated end-users. Students build their skills on a gradient, moving from the lecture section to paper-and-pencil workshops to hands-on workshops for each key topic. Topics include: Basics of the DATA Step (create, modify, IF/THEN/ELSE, BY, DO) Basics of the PROC Step (SORT, PRINT, FREQ, MEANS, CONTENTS) Basics of Programming in SAS (combining DATA and PROC steps) More Advanced SAS Capabilities (merge, functions, reporting) ----------------------------------------------------------- SAS Tools and Techniques, Sept 30-Oct 2, 1998 This is the second course, suitable for students already beyond the introductory level. It covers a broad range of programming tools which programmers typically need once they have been working with SAS software for a few months. A sampling of the topics includes arrays, three standard methods for recoding variables, cleaning data, creating tables with PROC TABULATE, creating and retrieving permanent formats, and advanced tools for reading data. Includes hands-on workshops.
