Date: Sun, 15 Nov 1998 22:16:53 -0500 From: Steven Allen Subject: Boston Windows User Group November 23 Meeting Monday, November 23, 1998 ------------------------- Dynamic HTML and ActiveX ======================== Boston Windows User Group ------------------------- 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Speaker at 8:00 --------------------- What's so Dynamic about Dynamic HTML? What's so Active about ActiveX? Helder Machado from Microsoft tells us what makes both electrifying. Helder, Consultant and Systems Engineer, has been working with Microsoft customers helping them plan for growth in Internet and eCommerce technologies. Dynamic HTML is the set of features that provide the client-side intelligence and flexibility to enable HTML authors to create interactive pages that dynamically change the display and/or content of a page entirely on the client machine. ActiveX is a marketing name for a set of Component Object Model (COM) technologies and services for user interface "widgets". These are the topics originally scheduled for October 28. Location: Microsoft's Multipurpose Room, 6th floor, 230 Third Ave, Waltham, MA, which has Parking and has Wheelchair access. Directions: Take Route 128/95 to Exit 27A. Go south on Third Ave passing between the northbound 128/95 and the Westin Hotel. Reaching Third Ave requires a U-turn to the right from the 128/95 northbound exit or a "cross the overpass and turn right" from the 128/95 southbound exit. From Third Ave, turn left onto Fourth Ave immediately after the Westin. Go to end, turn right and follow signs for Prospect Place. Bear right at the fork and follow signs to Visitor Parking. Lobby is on second floor. Also see map on http://www.bwug.org/events. ***************************************************************** ****** Join the speaker for a Dutch Treat Dinner. ****** ****** Meet us at Bertucci's Restaurant at 5:30. ****** ****** It's in the small strip mall diagonally across ****** ****** the 128/95 intersection with Winter St ****** ****** from the meeting location. BWUG's Peter Fleming, the speaker, is an indepedent consultant and author specializing in speech technology. He will demonstrate the latest technology and compare current products. His demo at the July 98 meeting went very badly because of a defective microphone but information presented then is current, so it will not be repeated. Please refer to notes on the earlier meetings on http://www.bwug.org. INF files are crucial in installing hardware and other capabilities - yet they are often overlooked in trouble-shooting. BWUG's Chris Lee worked for a modem manufacturer and now works for a manufacturer of digital sound processors. Chris tells us the ins and outs of INF files: structure, variables, information sources, developing/modifying, testing and uninstalling them. INF files change the Registry! Some INF-file- caused misbehavior I've seen includes incorrect IRQ's, lost ability to do domain name resolution, lost ability of a modem to dial a phone and phantom CD-ROM drives. ****** HELP ****** If your email address, phone number(s) or mailing address change, please go to our "Join" form: http://www.bwug.org/join and give us updates. Choose the "changes" option at the top of the form. We have been overwhelmed by the number of bad email addresses.
