SMPTE/New England May 1998 Meeting Announcement REBUILDING WLVI-TV FOR THE 21ST CENTURY How do you rebuild a 30-year old TV station completely from the ground up while still on the air from the same space? This is the focus of our newly rescheduled meeting on Saturday, May 30th, at 9:30am at the 75 Morrissey Blvd Studios of WLVI-WB56. The major topic of discussion will be the design criteria for the project with an emphasis on the technology deployed and the ergonomics involved in this 3-phase 4-year rebuild of the station as we phase out the transmission of NTSC and begin over-the-air transmission of SDTV and HDTV. A tour of WLVI's current technical facilitites and then a walk through phase 1 of the new facilities under construction will follow. Also, Vibrint Technologies, a local company working in the field of production server solutions, will demonstrate a low-cost MPEG-2 4:2:2 Production Video Server which is marketed to broadcast news operations. The system is capable of simultaneous record and playout of program intakes, news-story editing and airplay.
