Subject: 7/14, 7:30 Boston Voice Users meeting

Boston Voice Users will be meeting on Tuesday, July 14, at 7:30 in MIT
Building 1, Room 115.  This is not our usual room; we are using it
because it has a large screen display.

David Fox and Patricia Hawkins will be speaking on their experiences
of programming by voice.  David uses a combination of DragonDictate,
vi, and VoiceGrip; Patricia uses DragonDictate and Emacs, and
occasionally NaturallySpeaking.

Both David and I see this as in interesting human factors problem.  I
have focused on navigation in code: moving, copying, and selecting by
code blocks; and integrating DragonDictate macros with the power of
Emacs macros.

David's preliminary thoughts for his talk included:
1.  Choosing macro names -- balancing recognition accuracy, speed, and
ease of memorization.
2.  What you need to unlearn to program by voice.
3.  Important subtleties of DragonDictate macros, groups, and modes.
4.  Daydreams for the near (and not so near) future of voice programming
(The third item will obviously be specific to DragonDictate, but the
rest should be generally applicable.)


To get to Building 1, go in the main door of MIT at 77 Mass Ave. (the
MIT Dome).  Take the first corridor to your right; this is building 5.
Follow the corridor until you see the room numbers change from 5-nnn
to 1-nnn.  You are now in building 1.

Signs to the voice-users meeting will be posted, starting from the
main lobby.
