Date: Mon, 16 Feb 1998 22:33:09 -0500 From: Howard I Cohen Subject: SMPTE Meeting this February 18!\FWD SMPTE/New England February 1998 Meeting Announcement DIGITAL ARCHIVING Preserving Today's Media for Tomorrow There is a significant need for a Universal Preservation Format (UPF), designed specifically for digital technologies, that can store compound content (not only media itself but also information about it) so that the content can be accessed easily both today and into the indefinite future. The UPF could break the bond between the recording format and the machine through which the format is accessed. Dave MacCarn, Chief Technologist at WGBH, will present his vision of the world of digital archiving, including a paper submitted to the SMPTE. This presentation points out some existing technology that could be used, and is intended to provide a basis for industry discussion toward producing a universal preservation format. Also, Virage, Inc will discuss and demonstrate the Virage Media Cataloger, a product designed to allow automatic retrieval of selected audio and video material from a digital database. 7pm, Wednesday, February 18 WGBH - TV 114 Western Ave (Across the Street from 125 Western Ave.) Allston, MA Cafeteria - Second Floor For additional information, please contact: George Teplansky, WGBH-TV, 617-492-2777 x2382 UPCOMING SMPTE/NEW ENGLAND MEETINGS (Some dates are still tentative) (Last-minute meeting information is posted on our web site at http://www.v-site.net/smpte-ne.
