From: John Barrie Subject: nesoftdev 12-9 Date: Thursday, December 04, 1997 2:44 PM Please excuse the short notice. NOTICE: December 9 NESOFTDEV Monthly Meeting TIME: 6:00 -8:30 P.M. PLACE: Cafeteria at Prospect Place **** 1st Floor **** LOCATION: 9 Hillside Ave., Waltham exit 27a NEWS: *********************************************************************** Here we go: It all started out with a note saying let's learn Java. I imagined a small group of people helping each other out with each of us learning one topic and presenting it at the monthly meetings with Real Projects, Real People, Real Learning as the theme. Well, although this is still true, it is getting more exciting! You should block out the second Tuesday of each month from now through June. Tell other programmers you know to do the same! This is hard-core stuff and there is a lot to do so don't miss anything. Join us for a professional tune-up! As of December 9 and for 6 months our focus will be on Java. Although, you probably have often felt like dumping VB this is not our intent. As you will see we will draw upon our VB skills to help us understand Java. We are not heading for C++ heaven either. It is simply unprofessional in today's marketplace not to explore Java. My mission is to present as many independent views as possible. You can make you own mind up as to which tools you use and when, but exploring Java is our mission. So, please excuse me when I do a little Java evangelism at times. I'm just exploring the limits. You are welcome to join me. ************************************************************************ ****** 6:00 P.M. JAVA a la VB What with mixed signals and small communication the December 9 meeting became free. Well, what do you think a bursting at the seams Java enthusiast like me would do? Let the Java training begin of course! We will explore some introductory Java paths using several tools. We will start off exploring Java through VB. We will not be converting VB applications. We will simply take what we know about VB and click right into Java. Then, we will develop some things from scratch. Stop up to SoftPro before or after the meeting and browse "The Visual Basic Programmer's Guide to Java". I will be reading it tonight in prep for the meeting. If you want to help out you might read it too. CAUTION: I will be mentioning many Java resources throughout the course. Always use your own best judgement. WELCOME: TV Objects is sponsoring the December 9 meeting. We will be using their product to explore Java. Yes, they have a deal for us and yes you now can write you applications in VB and deploy it on Java and the Internet platforms. We will go beyond this though and use their tool to explore Java. Cool! PARTICULARS: 2nd Tuesday of each month, September-June, 9 Hillside Ave, Waltham, MA, Exit 27a, Route 128 (95), Third Ave, left after the Westin Hotel, then go right, right, right to 1st Floor Cafeteria, 6 p.m. SPONSORS: www.symantec.com, www.tvobjects.com, www.bosoft.com, www.englishwizard.com, www.powersoft.com, www.numega.com, www.visualcomp.com, www.glbs.com, www.humanfactors.com, Sodexho Management Services, www.csti.com, www.blue-sky.com, www.vigortech.com, www.ora.com, www.SoftPro.com, www.ntxtras.com, www.vbxtras.com, www.microsoft.com More: John Barrie (508) 829 2181, johnbarrie@compuserve.com
