Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 23:13:56 -0500 (EST) From: Colin Godfrey Subject:SIGGRAPH/Boston at GTE Labs, Wed. Dec. 2 SIGGRAPH/Boston Meeting Announcement GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS Wednesday, December 2, 1998 at GTE Labs, Waltham, MA Jeff Donze of ESRI will talk on geographic information systems, or "GIS". The talk will start with a description of what GIS is, and a brief overview of the GIS industry. He will spend the bulk of the evening discussing GIS technology, illustrated with demonstrations of ESRI's products. While rooted initially in the Federal, state and local government markets primarily for land use management, GIS has more recently been employed in many other sectors including transportation (fleet management, traffic monitoring), health care (disease mapping, health care providers/subscriber mapping), utilities (facilities management, outage analysis), insurance (risk analysis), business/retail (demographic analysis, site location) and others. With the advent of multiple tier architected computing networks, GIS is deployed through thin clients to non GIS professionals, through the web, or through client/server enterprise systems.
