Date: Oct 10/28/15 6:59 AM Subject: NEJUG Meeting ( Thu, Nov 12): Rewriting a Major API: Swapping out the engine while the car is running From: Stevel Lintz The close of another great NEJUG year is coming up and I hope you'll be able to attend. This time, we've put together an advanced technical topic with an experienced speaker still strongly rooted in the development space. After the December break (no meeting that month), we'll be coming back at full force in January with another strong technical topic. The details are not yet settled, but it's looking like something in either the cloud space or the concurrency space – a wide spectrum of possibilities, but always the best we can get. Don't wait and miss out - register now for the November meeting. It will be a excellent opportunity to learn, network, and enjoy pizza and soft drinks - fully sponsered by our wonderful meeting host Constant Contact. Title: Rewriting a Major API: Swapping out the engine while the car is running Presenter: Jared Stehler Location: Constant Contact Date: Thu, Nov 12 Register now to reserve your seat Presentation Overview: Once an API is released to production and entrenched in the core business, it can be difficult to modernize over time. In this talk, we'll dive into the techniques and supporting software we developed which allowed us to transition seamlessly from a high-traffic legacy python API to a new one written completely in Java. We'll cover how we created tooling and a visual interface for detecting and exploring output differences, segmented traffic to roll out gradually, and introduced canary deployments to ensure safer deployments. Speaker Background: Jared Stehler is a Staff Software Engineer at HubSpot, with over 10 years of experience in industries ranging from finance, ad tech, publishing, and marketing. After progressing from WebSphere AS through Spring and now to JAX-RS/Guice, he now specializes in writing robust micro-services in the twelve-factor style.
