Date: :Oct 10/06/14 11:52 PM Subject: NEJUG Meeting - THIS WEEK: Stratus Openstack Cloud Product Architecture and Fault Tolerant KVM in the Cloud From: Stevel Lintz This week, on Thu, Oct 9, two speakers from Stratus Technologies will be speaking at the monthly NEJUG meeting. Both Keith Meyer and Aaron Smith are senior technical staff who focus on software engineering and development, leading their teams' work at translating abstract business visions into concrete products. \Keith will kick off the main topic with a broad discussion about the driving use cases and business needs that the OpenStack product addresses. With that in place, he will then share with us how that informs their architectural choices. After the break, Aaron will focus on the specific issues involved in designing and delivering a fault tolerant remote desktop (aka KVM) in the cloud. Together, these two talks provide a unique opportunity to see inside a major cloud oriented development effort, from the driving vision, through to specific engineering decisions made to fulfill upon that vision. Don't miss this special dual presentation. Doors will open at 5pm for networking, pizza and soda provided by Constant Contact will arrive around 5:30pm, and the meeting will begin promptly at 6pm. First, Keith Meyer will present Stratus Openstack Cloud Product Architecture, focusing on the technical underpinnings, and some of the ways Stratus is making Cloud Technology both easier to manage and more highly available. After the break, we'll look more closely at Cloud Workload Availability with Aaron Smith presenting Fault Tolerant KVM in the Cloud. Event Speakers: Keith Meyer - Keith is currently a Cloud Architect at Stratus Technologies and has been working on the Stratus Cloud Management platform for the past year. Prior to that Keith worked on Cloud Storage Management at EMC and several Multi-tenant SaaS, B2B, eCommerce, Rules Based and Data Warehouse/Analytic applications. His interests lie in building applications that make complex operations and workflows easy to consume. This will be Keith's first time presenting at the NEJUG, but he has plenty of experience speaking at the Boston Java Users Group, but doesn'tt want to reflect on the number of years that have since passed. Aaron Smith - Aaron Smith is a software engineer currently focused on bringing high-availability and fault-tolerance to the OpenStack Cloud Platform. After receiving a M.S and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, Aaron became one of the first employees of a telecom startup focused on integrating SONET, ATM, and Ethernet in the Metro environment. At the startup, Aaron started with hardware architecture and design of the system and eventually moved to the office of the CTO for the acquiring company, Ciena. After a weathering the telecom downturn, Aaron again returned to the startup environment when he joined Proliphix. Proliphix was formed to bring the power of the web to HVAC control systems and targeted small-box retailers who could not afford systems from traditional HVAC companies. At Proliphix Aaron started as lead software architect and finished as CTO. The Proliphix HVAC control system is installed in over 2000 locations worldwide. At Stratus, Aaron has participated in the architecture, development and deployment of applications and techniques that endeavor to bring reliability to OpenStack. I hope to see you there!
