Date: May 05/27/14 1:53 PM Subject: NEJUG Meeting - NEXT WEEK: Apache Solr From: Stevel Lintz Summer is near upon us, which means the season's last NEJUG meeting is coming up before the July break. This year, we've made a special effort to have the team of Al Cole & David Smiley provide a thorough presentation on Apache Solr. Both Al and David have worked extensively with both Solr and its supporting Lucene project. As big data becomes even "more bigger", search becomes even more important. In addition, embedded search is no longer an application "nice to have," but it's becoming a "must have." That's why this topic is so important and immediate - don't miss this discussion; don't let yourself fall behind the curve. All you need do is register, show up for the meeting, relax and absorb. Come by a bit early, and you'll have time to network with colleagues and have first crack at pizza and sodas - fully sponsored by Constant Contact (who also provide our excellent meeting facility - thank you). In addition to our main presentation, we will also have a short "Lightning Talk" (abt. 10 mins) and sharing of community announcements - such as area workshops / seminars and often including several direct job solicitations (i.e. not placement agents, although sometimes them, too, if vetted by the Advisory Team). Register now to reserve your seat Title: Apache Solr Presenter: Al Cole and David Smiley Location: Constant Contact Date: Thu, Jun 12 Time: Doors open at 5:00pm, pizza at 5:30pm, with the meeting starting promptly at 6:00pm Presentation Overview: The Apache Solr framework is an open source search platform written in Java. This software stack is capable of quickly finding relevant information from your enterprise content sources (e.g. web sites, file shares, RDBMS repositories, email and social media) using simple keywords and filter queries. As Java developers, we are in an excellent position to harness the power of Apache Solr and build useful search-based applications. This presentation will be divided into two parts. The first part will introduce you to its most popular features including: full-text search, relevancy matching, hit highlighting, faceting, spell checking, rich document (e.g. MS Office, PDF) processing, and geospatial search. In addition, we will discuss the importance of a good extract, transform and load (ETL) process to the index population phase and review some best practices around the development of search-based applications. The second part of the presentation will drill down into several of the features and provide a more in-depth discussion of how to properly implement them in order to enhance the search experience of your users. About our speaker: Al Cole is a Principal of NorthRidge Software where he specializes in the building of search-based applications for industries such as automotive, pharmaceutical, medical devices, government (NASA, DoD) and transportation. Al has over two decades of experience building enterprise applications and has served in numerous professional roles including founder, architect, lead developer, consultant and entrepreneur. http://www.linkedin.com/in/coleal David Smiley is a well recognized Apache Lucene/Solr expert. He wrote the first book on Solr. David is a Lucene/Solr committer and PMC member that improves Lucene and Solr. He speaks at conferences about it, does training, and offers independent consulting services. David has developed most of Lucene's spatial module. I look forward to seeing you on Thu, Jun 12.
