Date: Dec 12/01/14 9:29 PM Subject: [FOSS User Group] Free FOSS meeting next Thursday, December 4th From: Dick and Jill Miller Happy Thanksgivings, fellow FOSS fans! Please share this message - our guest speaker is worth sharing! Learn about and share Free, Open-Source Software with the FOSS User Group at the Natick Community-Senior Center! We meet 3-6PM on the 1st Thursday of most months (but 2nd Thursday in January, July and September) at the Natick Community-Senior Center at 117 East Central Street (in Room 125, the 1st-floor Classroom). It's for all, beginners through experts, on Linux or Mac OSX or Windows. We're WiFi-equipped, we're friendly, and it's free. Join us if you can! Last month, Ubuntu Linux celebrated its tenth birthday and Unity turned four. Last week, Firefox celebrated its tenth birthday. And this week, Dick is celebrating a new SSD, making his Ubuntu even faster than usual. Whee! At this Thursday's FOSS meeting, we all get to enjoy a visit with a fascinating speaker and promoter of Open-Source, Walter Bender of Sugar Labs. As past Director of the MIT Media Lab and as a central figure in the One Laptop Per Child project (using unusual computers to educate kids in the world's poorest regions), Walter has a lot to share - and wait 'til you see TurtleArt! (It's now on the Center's Linux computer, for you to try!) So let the celebrations continue, on Thursday! At our Thursday, December 4th FOSS meeting (as time and interest permit): Raffle Item demo. Hot Hardware show-and-tell (5-min. each): 240GB Intel 730 SSD upgrades Dick's netbook for $110 (other 240GB SSDs from $70); did you find a great buy in the Black Friday-Cyber Monday sales? The FOSS News: Upcoming meetings; 10th anniversary of Firefox; Bruce Byfield: "Debian and Ubuntu present a united front that is becoming increasingly harder to ignore."; Gates Foundation mandates open access for all research it funds; Hack Keurig 2.0's DRM and save 90% of its coffee cost (or buy a Keurig 1.0 machine, or don't.) Book raffle (courtesy O'Reilly Media). Guest Presentation: The OLPC, Sugar OS, TurtleArt and FOSS, guest presentation by Walter Bender of Sugar Labs. FOSS Challenge: Review of Dasher ("A fast, non-keyboard text entry system", in the Ubuntu Software Center.) Fotoxx demos: new 30-min. video tutorial, new Tools>Magnify, Areas>Select, Mashup, and Slide Show's "Ken Burns" Zoom effect. FOSS Q&A Bring a friend to our monthly FOSS meeting! Beginners, arrive by 3PM for the introductory slide talk. Casual from 2PM, and/or join us for dinner afterward.
