Date: Jan 01/06/13 4:40 PM Subject: [BNUG-News] ** Tuesday January 8 BNUG Presentation *** From: "Dale Heron" Boston Network Users Group Monthly General Meeting ** Tuesday – January 8 - 6:30-9:00PM ** THIS MONTH: Abandon Hope all ye who enter Data! Please join us this month for a presentation on security given by Jack Daniel. Below is a brief description of what Jack will be covering. Information Security often appears to be a lost cause, we have an ever-growing pool of attackers, and ever-expanding set of attacks, and a dire lack of resources to address these and other challenges. Data and analysis in reports from Verizon, Trustwave, Mandiant, Symantec, and others paint an interesting picture of the state of information security, and it isn't pretty- but there is much to learn from the best of industry analysis. Complementing the industry reports, I have done some simple vulnerability research and found cause for both despair, and hope. This presentation will explore the current state of information security through a review of several industry surveys and reports, then through some original analysis of Internet systems and their weaknesses, and end with a discussion of limitations and opportunities for improving the state of security, both in our immediate challenges and in the larger environment. And bio: Jack Daniel, Technical Product Manager for Tenable Network Security, has over 20 years of experience in network and system administration and security, and has held a variety of practitioner and management positions. A technology community activist, he supports several information security and technology organizations and is a co-founder of Security BSides. We will be meeting at New England Rehabilitation Hospital on 2 Rehabilitation Way in Woburn, MA in the NE room near the cafeteria. The receptionist can point you in the right direction. * Refreshments are served from 6:30 pm. Meeting starts at 7:00pm with the technical presentation concluding at 9:00 pm. * BNUG monthly meetings, membership and refreshments are always FREE and you are not required to be a member to attend.
