Date: Sep 09/03/12 10:47 AM Subject: [FOSS/Linux] Free, monthly FOSS User Group in Natick on Thursday, September 6th From: "Dick and Jill Miller" FOSS (Free, Open-Source Software) User Group at the Natick Senior Center Hi, fellow FOSSers! Please share this announcement with interested friends and associates. Happy Labor Day! We hope your summer has been an enjoyable one. Visit our NatickFOSS meeting, if you can, from 3-6PM this Thursday afternoon, September 6th at the Natick Senior Center. This month, we have a very interesting guest talk by Clark Andrews, a senior at Natick High School. This summer, Clark and a student from Wellesley High visited India to set up all the equipment for two competent, minimal-cost public computer networks - using Android Linux and, of course, all-free software. Dick Miller will update you on new editing features and artwork in our favorite photo-editing and photo-management program, Fotoxx. He'll also show you how to modify your favorite photo for a poster-sized print - using this week's current $15 deal at Staples! And inexpensive framing options, as well! Dick also promises - if you remind him - to demonstrate the multiple desktops in Linux, to show how to access them easily in Ubuntu using Unity, and to discuss when and why a spare desktop or two might come in handy. There's a new upgrade to April's Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Live CD; it's named Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS, and if you bring a flash drive you can go home with a copy. Or, should you wait for Ubuntu 12.10, coming in late October? Algot Runeman will address why you may or may not want to stick with the Long Term Support version of Ubuntu Linux. This should be the last month we'll meet in the Natick Senior Center's temporary home. In October, we'll meet a week late in order to be early users of the brand-new Natick Community/Senior Center back at the original location! We'll have a book or two to raffle off (courtesy of O'Reilly Media, Inc. and Boston User Groups). All this and more, at our monthly FOSS meeting. Bring a friend! As usual, we list other FOSS/Linux meetings at: http://www.millermicro.com/eventscalendar.html Our own FOSS User Group events (with links!) appear at: http://www.millermicro.com/FOSSUserGroupArchive.html Or just browse to NatickFOSS.org and click on the next meeting date. Want to socialize a bit? Show up early, at 2PM, for informal chatting, to fiddle on computers, to help each other, and to have fun. Later, after the formal presentations, we have more informal time for same. And consider going on to an inexpensive group dinner at the close of the meeting. General notes: Try "SeniorLinux", the Linux desktop computer in the Natick Senior Center's Computer Lab. It now runs Ubuntu 12.04; for Help, mouse past the left edge and click on the question-mark icon. Algot's beginners manual will be on board soon. The Natick Senior Center has wireless service in its Library Room, where we meet. So bring your laptop computer if you wish. Our FOSS web page leads to our Archive Page, with info on past meetings and clues on the next. Would you like to present something at an upcoming meeting? Publicize these FOSS meetings, to encourage other interested computer users to participate and to subscribe to our e-mail list. At the meeting, ask Algot Runeman for some FOSS User Group business cards to hand out to friends. Our next FOSS and Linux get-together is Thursday, September 3rd, 3-6PM at the Natick Senior Center. Social Hour at 2PM. Introductory slide talk on FOSS and Linux, 3-3:30PM. For more info, see the sign-off. After the introductory slide presentation, we're at least half-scheduled but with room for attendees to fine-tune the meeting agenda. Topics can be Linux specific (L), FOSS for Microsoft Windows (W) or Apple OS X (X), and often cover all of the above (A). On the back shelf for possible demonstration and discussion: (L) Inside Linux, with the Terminal and BASH (A) The power of local e-mail, using Mozilla Thunderbird (A) Videophone apps (Skype, Empathy and others) (L) More Fotoxx fun (A) More Inkscape fun (A) On-line help for Linux and FOSS (L) A hands-on Linux InstallFest (A) Your questions and suggestions Beginners to experts, we hope to see you and interested friends this Thursday!
