Date: Jan 01/01/12 5:58 PM Subject: [BNUG-News] **January BNUG Meeting Notice ** From: "Dale Heron" Boston Network Users Group Monthly General Meeting ** Tuesday January 3 - 6:30-9:00PM ** THIS MONTH: Hyper-V Networking and Storage Please join BNUG on January 3rd for a presentation on Hyper-V Networking and Storage given by Dan Stolts from Microsoft. Server virtualization allows for a single physical computer to host and run, simultaneously, two or more different OS environments which function as independent entities with individual identities, application stacks, and so on. Hyper-V is a next-generation, 64-bit hypervisor-based virtualization technology that offers reliable and scalable platform capabilities. Together with System Center, it offers a single set of integrated management tools for both physical and virtual resources. Implementing Hyper-V not only reduces costs, improves utilization, optimizes infrastructure, but allows businesses to rapidly provision new servers. Now that virtualization technologies are considered mainstream in the datacenter and in server rooms, it is time to take a deep look at some of its key technologies. In this session, we will start with a quick overview of Hyper-V for those that may not be familiar with it. Then we will dive deep into networking and storage. We will look at the many different types of networks and storage as well as how to configure them. These lessons will be blended with standard networking and storage concepts to give a complete view of virtualized networking and storage. At the end of this session, you will have a full understanding of the different technologies, how to use, deploy and manage them. The Virtual Network Manager in Hyper-V allows for the creation and control of virtual network switches. There are three types of virtual networks in Hyper-V: external, internal, and private. There is no limit to the number of internal and private virtual networks that can be created within Hyper-V. When considering storage in a virtualized infrastructure running Hyper-V there are four fundamental types of disks: Fixed, Dynamic, Differencing and Pass-through. We will look at how to create them, manage them and even leverage their great benefits in a non-virtualized environment. We will look at Boot to VHD, High Availability and much, much more BIO: Dan Stolts (The "ITProGuru") is a technology expert who is a master of systems management and security.
