Date: Sep 09/09/09 11:23 PM Subject: [GNHLUG] Seacoast/UNH/Durham/SLUG - Mon 14 Sep - KDE Plasmoids in Python From: "Ben Scott" Who : Rob Anderson What : KDE Plasmoids in Python Date : Mon 14 Sep 2009 Time : 7 PM to 9 PM Where: Room 301, Morse Hall, UNH, Durham, NH The KDE desktop previously used an application called SuperKaramba to place active widgets on the KDE Desktop. In KDE 4 they moved to new framework that supports a number ways to create those widgets. Plasma is one of those framework components; it is based on Qt, and thus has a PyQt4 interface. Meanwhile: Months ago Rob presented a PyQt4 application he wrote called "PictureToss". It was written because a number of KDE 4 problems combined to make the KDE4 desktop slideshow much more annoying than it was under KDE3. Rob decided it was worth it to make what he really wanted. His PictureToss program let you turn images into virtual photo glossies, toss them on your desktop, and drag them around, arrange them, etc. It was neat. Then Rob discovered the backend Plasma code for Python wasn't really ready yet, either, so the final tie-in to KDE was never done. Future releases of KDE4 solved most of the annoyances that originally drove him into action, so PictureToss never made it into a KDE Plasmoid. Now comes KDE 4.4 with new things to annoy Rob! Unfortunate for him, but good for us: He found the tools are now available, completed the project, and created a Plasmoid out of PictureToss. The process and PyQt4 code needed will be covered in the September meeting. Hope to see you there! === About SLUG === SLUG is the Seacoast Linux User Group, and is a chapter of GNHLUG, the Greater NH Linux User Group. Rob Anderson is the SLUG coordinator, and reliably comes up with interesting topics each month. SLUG meets the second Monday of every month, same time, same place. You can find out more about SLUG and GNHLUG at their websites. http://slug.gnhlug.org http://www.gnhlug.org Meetings take place starting at 7:00 PM. Meetings are open to all. The meeting proper ends around 9ish, but it's not uncommon to find hangers-on there until 10 or later. They take place in Room 301 (the third floor conference room), of Morse Hall, at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham. _______________________________________________ gnhlug-announce mailing list gnhlug-announce@mail.gnhlug.org http://mail.gnhlug.org/mailman/listinfo/gnhlug-announce/
