Date: Tuesday, December 04, 2007 8:58:57 AM MacTechGrp Meeting Wednesday Dec 5, 2007 7-9PM Room 315 Bldg E51 MIT Sloan School Next Meeting: Dec 5, 2007 7:00 PM Building E51 Room 315 Manage your daemons & logs too! Mac OS X introduces some elegant improvements to some of the traditional Unix services. Steve Sisak will give a talk introducing 2 of them: launchd and asl (Apple System Log) and demonstrate some techniques for debugging daemons and interprocess communication. In Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, Apple introduced a new system startup program called launchd. The launchd daemon takes over many tasks from cron, xinetd, mach_init, and init, which are UNIX programs that traditionally have handled system initialization, called systems scripts, run startup items, and generally prepared the system for the user. The Apple System Log facility comprises the asl(3) API, a new syslogd server, and the syslog(1) command-line utility. The system supports structured and extensible messages, permitting advanced message browsing and management through search APIs and other components of the Apple system log facility.
