From: donald nicklas Subject: [Boston-voice-users] January 10 Meeting Announcement - correction Date: Wednesday, January 04, 2006 13:48:48 ------------------------------------------------- A quick reminder- our regular meeting is next week: When: Tuesday, January 10, 2005 Where: MIT, Room 2-135 (directions below) Topic: Linux-Capable Speech Recognition, Current Efforts Susan Cragin, Director of the Open-Source Speech Recognition Initiative (OSSRI), will give a talk about current efforts to develop Linux-capable speech recognition, including existing experiments at the university level, making Dragon NaturallySpeaking run on Linux through "helper" programs, and developing a new program from the ground up. Ms. Cragin used Dragon NaturallySpeaking to take notes and brainstorm for her book -No M'Orr Nukes.- She became convinced that speech recognition was an effective research and learning aid, so she helped found OSSRI to ensure that such software would be developed using an open-source model. Cragin is not a programmer, and her talk will be general in nature. Ms Cragin recommends the web sites shown at the end of this message. Boston Voice Users meets at MIT from 7:30 p.m. until approximately 9:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. -------------------------------------------- Don Nicklas Boston Voice Users www.bostonvoiceusers.com -------------------------------------------- Directions to room: Go in the main door of MIT, at 77 Mass. Ave. Go straight down the Infinite Corridor for as long as you can. When forced to turn, go right. You'll pass one intersection decorated with murals of jungle animals, with a hallway to library on your left, and stairs on your right. 2-135 is further along on the Left. For wheelchair access, there is a ramp and door to the left of the stairs at 77 Mass. Ave. (behind the bus stop) This entrance gives you basement level access to the elevator in Lobby 7 (the lobby at 77 Mass. Ave). Please feel free to cross-post this message. ------------------------------------------------- Because of a computer error, my announcement went out with the wrong date. The meeting is on Tuesday, January 10. (The computer was running a program only coincidentally written by me!) :-( Also, Building 6 is still under construction. So, the directions should be amended as follows: The northwest end of building 6 and portions of the courtyard between Building 6 and Building 18 are closed to pedestrian traffic because of construction. This situation is expected to continue for about a year. Here are amended directions to take you through building 4 instead of building 6. Go three quarters of the way down the infinite corridor. Turn right at Building 4 and follow the main corridor of building 4 all the way to the end. Turn left, follow this corridor to the intersection of buildings 6, 2 and the corridor to the library. Turn right and follow the corridor to room 2-135. You can also get in from the building 14 library and Building 8.
