From: The Boston Access User's Group Subject: Access Day - Wednesday 8/16/06 (revision 2) Date: Friday, August 11, 2006 17:02:29 This is a reminder that Microsoft Access Day is this Wednesday 8/16/06. Location: Microsoft Corporation, 201 Jones Road, Waltham, MA 02451 (781) 487-6400 For directions and Map: http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/info/usaoffices/newengland/waltham.mspx For additional information visit the Access Day web site: http://www.BostonAccessDay.com/ The third time's the charm. Sorry for the extra announcements. The last set mistakenly still showed Ed doing his presentation. -Dean ****** AGENDA CHANGE ****** Due to a conflict, Ed Craddock will be unable to present his Sand and Gravel application this month. In his place, Dean will demonstrate his technique for building client/server applications using ADO (see schedule below for more info). Ed has promised to return next month to give us a look at his application. Here is the Agenda for Access Day: INTRODUCTION TO ACCESS ***************************************************************** Introduction To Access -- 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM Presented by: Dean Serrentino of Paradigm Information Systems, Inc. Get started building powerful database applications. See how to quickly and easily build Access forms and reports using built-in Wizards. We'll develop a comprehensive contact management application in just two and a half hours. INTERMEDIATE ACCESS ***************************************************************** Deploying Access Applications -- 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Presented by: Dean Serrentino of Paradigm Information Systems, Inc. Dean discusses considerations for deploying Access applications in various scenarios. He will investigate issues such as splitting databases, the use of .mde files, multi-user concerns, setting start-up options, and others. ***************************************************************** Access Trauma Center -- 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM Presented by: John Giuliano of Stone-Crowne Associates We'll spend two hours helping to debug, add enhancements, or make design recommendations. The audience is encouraged to bring in real world developer problems that need solving now. Bring your applications on floppy, CD, or Zip Disk. ACCESS DEVELOPER ***************************************************************** Introduction To SQL Server -- 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM Presented by: John Giuliano of Stone-Crowne Associates In this session, we will work exclusively with SQL Server 2005 and the tools that are available to manage it. The focus of this series is to enable Access developers to design client-server applications using Access as the user interface. ***************************************************************** General Announcements and Forum -- 6:00 PM - 6:30 PM Presented by: John Giuliano of Stone-Crowne Associates Share information regarding upcoming events, Access bugs, add-on products, and anything else that affects the world of the Access developer. ***************************************************************** Using Recursive and Built-In Functions -- 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM Presented by: Martin Svedlow This demonstration will show how recursive functions can be used. The example shown will be in the context of saving a folder/file directory tree to a file. In addition to using recursion, the same example will also be shown using the built-in FileSearch object along with the Folder and File objects. ***************************************************************** Client/Server Applications Using ADO -- 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM Presented by: Dean Serrentino of Paradigm Information Systems, Inc. Traditionally, the approach of creating a true client-server application using Access and SQL Server included a lot of time, coding and debugging. Dean demonstrates a technique that he has developed using unbound Access forms, ADO and class modules. Dean's method significantly reduces the amount of code written and potential bugs introduced into the application, and includes automatic data validation. The result is reduced development time and improved application stability. Dean will begin his talk with an overview of client-server development, ADO and class modules. He will follow with a demonstration of an application which implements this technique, as well as a review of the code that it uses. If you are interested in making a presentation at an Access Developer's meeting, please contact our Event Coordinator Teresa DeLuca via the Boston Access Day web site at
