October 5th:
6:30pm Introductions and Administrivia
7:00pm Network Access Protection technologies in Windows Longhorn Server
by Gene Ferioli and Steve Carbone of Microsoft
The recent worm outbreak highlights the need for companies to guarantee
the proper "health" of all IT assets prior to allowing full interaction
with the corporate network. The Network Access Protection (NAP)
presentation:
Network Access Protection (NAP), a proposed platform for Microsoft(r)
Windows Server(tm) "Longhorn," the next version of the Windows Server
operating system, provides policy enforcement components that help
ensure that computers connecting to a network meet administrator-defined
requirements for system health. Administrators can use a combination of
policy validation and network isolation components to control network
access. Administrators can also choose to temporarily isolate computers
that do not meet requirements to a more secure network segment, called a
restricted network. Depending on the configuration chosen, the
restricted network might contain resources required to update the
computers so that they then meet the requirements for full network
access. Network Access Protection includes an application programming
interface (API) set for developers and administrators to create complete
solutions for network access, isolation, and policy compliance.
Gene Ferioli has been with Microsoft for 8 years, and is presently the
Program Manager on Windows Server Customer Advisory team (WINCAT). He
specializes in network and host security, PKI, communication protocols,
Active Directory & network design, and information security policies and
process.
