From: Subject: [BNUG News] BNUG E-Mail Reminder - Please Note Room Change Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 18:33:49 +0000 Boston Network Users Group Monthly General Meeting Tuesday - March 8th, 2005 6:30-9:00PM The Blue Room at Shaw Hall http://www.bnug.org/MountIdaMap.html Mount Ida College Newton, Massachusetts THIS MONTH: All About Portals Alpha NetSolutions, Inc. http://www.alphanetsolutions.net What is a Portal? The word Portal generally refers to a website that aggregates content from multiple sources. More specifically, there are a number of different Portal types that are in use: Internet Portal - This is a website that targets a general audience, but provides custom content based on user preference. Any website you've been to that allows you to create an account and customize the look, feel, and content of the information you get from that website is an Internet Portal. (Examples include My Yahoo! and cnn.com). Customer Portal - This is a website that targets customers and potential customers of a company. Again, the difference between an online catalog and a customer portal is that the content is customized based on user preference and sometimes user shopping patterns. (An example of this is amazon.com). Intranet Portal - This is a website that delivers customizable content to the company's employees, and possibly business partners and vendors. Many companies are now using this type of portal to consolidate application access into a single point. Vertical Industry Portal (or Vortal) - This is a portal Web site that provides information and resources for a particular industry. Vortals are the Internet's way of catering to consumers' focused-environment preferences. Vortals typically provide news, research and statistics, discussions, newsletters, online tools, and many other services that educate users about a specific industry.
