Anderson Reply-To: discuss@gnhlug.org Subject: SLUG meeting on OpenEmbedded Monday 9/13 7pm UNH Morse 301 Directions can be found on the slug.gnhlug.org website. This month we will go over the Open Embedded build environment. This build environment is designed to build from sources an entire Linux system, much like Gentoo Linux. The difference is that this system is a cross compiler building for a target system that differs from the build host. The build and target operating systems are both Linux, but the final execution targets are handheld devices. The current system is nearing completion with for many of the common Linux handhelds (Zaurus and iPAQ). Other target platforms are also being worked on, some of which include older laptop hardware, Dell Axim, and tablet computers. This system is extremely interesting on many levels. It provides individual packages on a fine grained scale. It can generate flashable images, or tarballs off the root file system (ready for NFS or loopback mounting). The information required for packaging is minimal due to the object oriented designs inheritance of significant functionality. It provides a complete build environment for cross compilation, including building it's own cross compilers and build tools for the native build host, It maintains an area for shared libraries and all the other code required for development on the target architecture. It's currently coded in a combination of Python and Shell scripting. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Robert E.
