Abstract: Risk Management; Determining How Much Risk You Can Afford to Take Every software effort is full of risk, because true value requires some risk taking. The question is how much risk can you afford to take? Is Risk Management (RM) really about mitigating risk or assessing risk in the context of value? After years of RM consulting, Tim Lister will offer his view of the role of RM in project selection and management. Be ready for a few surprises. About the Speaker: Tim Lister is a principal of the Atlantic Systems Guild, Inc., based in the New York office. He divides his time between consulting, teaching, and writing. Tim is co-author with his partner, Tom DeMarco, of the new book, Waltzing With Bears: Managing Risk on Software Projects (Dorset House, 2003). His article, written with Tom DeMarco, Both Sides Always Lose: Litigation of Software Intensive Contracts, was the feature article in the February 2000 issue of the journal, CrossTalk. He is working on tailoring software development processes using software risk management techniques. He is on the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Repository Technology Advisory Council, and is a member of the Cutter IT Trends Council. For the Cutter IT Trends Council he has written the majority opinion on Internet2, Continuous Partial Attention, and Risk Management. Tim Lister and Tom DeMarco are also co-authors of Peopleware: Productive Projects and Teams, 2nd Edition (Dorset House, 1999). Tim is a member of the I.E.E.E. and the A.C.M. He also serves as a panelist for the American Arbitration Association, arbitrating disputes involving software and software services. About the Roundtables: Roundtables are focused group or "birds-of-a-feather" discussions, with a facilitator, to stimulate and moderate discussion. Forums are continuing discussions with a central theme, e.g., the Software Testing Forum and the Software Process Improvement Forum. These discussion groups are held during the Networking portion of the SPIN meeting from 6:00 to 6:45. Specific information about the roundtables will be available before the meeting.
