Abstract: Software Architecture and Product Quality Sound architecture-centric practices are critical to the product quality of software-intensive systems. In large software-intensive systems, the achievement of non-functional quality attributes such as performance, availability, reusability, survivability, and modifiability depends more on the overall software architecture than on code-level practices such as language choice, detailed design, algorithms, data structures, testing, and so forth. The architecture is also key to any systematic reuse. Software product lines have emerged as the reuse strategy that yields results. Many commercial organizations have experienced tremendous cost and schedule improvements and significantly decreased technical risk through architecture evaluations and product line practices. The Software Engineering Institute is working with these commercial organizations and translating their success into technology and practices in the areas of architecture and product lines that are applicable to the broad software community. This talk will describe some of the SEI's efforts in these areas and the benefits that have been achieved. About the Speaker: Linda Northrop has over 30 years of experience in the software development field as practitioner, manager, consultant, and educator. She is currently director of the Product Line Systems Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The Product Line Systems Program works in the areas of software architecture, reengineering, component and product line engineering. Her current publications are in the areas of software product lines, software architecture, and object technology. She is co-author of the book, "Software Product Lines: Practices and Patterns." She is a frequently invited speaker at technical and corporate conferences and was featured in a television special on object technology aired by the British Broadcasting Company. Most recently she was a keynote speaker for the International Conference on Software Engineering 2001, the Aspect-Oriented System Development Conference 2002, and was selected as the 2001 Carnegie Science Award of Excellence for Information Technology recipient. Before joining the SEI, she was associated with both the United States Air Force Academy and the State University of New York as professor of computer science, and with both Eastman Kodak and IBM as a software engineer. As a private consultant, Linda also worked for an assortment of companies covering a wide range of software systems. She chaired both the first Software Product Line Conference (SPLC1), and SPLC2 held in 2002. Linda is the OOPSLA Steering Committee Chair and was OOPSLA 2001 Conference Chair. She is also on the Executive Committee of ACM SIGPLAN, a member of ACM and the IEEE Computer Society, the Computer Sciences Accreditation Commission, and the ACM/IEEE Joint Committee on Software Engineering. About the Roundtables: Roundtables are focused group or "birds-of-a-feather" discussions, with a facilitator, to stimulate and moderate discussion. Forums are continuing discussions with a central theme, e.g., the Software Testing Forum and the Software Process Improvement Forum. These discussion groups are held during the Networking portion of the SPIN meeting from 6:00 to 6:45. Please Note: Roundtable topics will be included in the "reminder" SPIN announcement email.
