This month's meeting will on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 7pm to 9pm at the IBM SPC in Waltham. We will hold group elections and then move right along to a presentation by Dennis McCarthy on "What's new in .NET". Dennis founded the WebTech group in 1996, and is our current secretary. Abstract: At the .NET launch events, much was made about features of the Common Language Runtime (CLR) such as the virual machine, garbage collection, and just-in-time compilation. These are of course old news to SmallTalk and Java developers. This talk will focus on two aspects of .NET that are really new: the ASP.NET component architecture and the ADO.NET DataSet. ASP.NET attempts to provide a converged programming model for both Windows and Web applications. The ADO.NET DataSet provides a new design pattern for the interaction between applications and databases, and unifies the handling of relational and XML data. Finally, we will revisit the age old debate regarding stateless versus stateful middle tier in the context of the .NET framework. About the speaker: Dennis McCarthy has over twenty years experience in software development, working as a researcher, product developer, and consultant. He is currently working at OneSource Information Services in Concord. In 1996 he founded the Web Tech Group. -- Daniel S.
