Software Quality Group Meeting Meetings of the Software Quality Group are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the facilities of Sun Microsystems, Burlington (Driving directions below). MEETING DAY & DATE: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 TIME: 6:00 PM Networking, 6:30 PM Meeting HEADLINE: Introducing and Sustaining a Worldwide Software Inspection Process SPEAKER: Marc Rene, GTECH MORE INFO: John Pustaver, 978-443-4254, pustaver@swquality.com LOCATION: Sun Microsystems, Burlington (Driving directions below) DESCRIPTION: Introducing Formal Software Inspections to a geographically dispersed organization presents unique obstacles. To ensure that the inspection process meets the needs of your organization, and will remain effective after deployment, a Process Action Team (PAT) should be established. With management's support, the PAT will identify key weaknesses in the software development activities and determine the scope of the inspection process. A thorough training course should then be developed, focusing on aspects that ensure trainees are equipped with the skills necessary to participate in all roles of the inspection process. A mechanism that allows for inspection monitoring is then established and periodic reviews of inspection information are performed to verify compliance. The reviews are critical, as it will ensure that the inspection process does not erode over time. This presentation will provide a brief overview of inspections, discuss the responsibilities of a Process Action Team, and focus on the importance of periodic monitoring. Lessons learned will be shared, that include specific measurements utilized to determined formal inspection effectiveness. The content of this presentation is taken from a corporate procedure currently used by GTECH Corporation as well as experience gained from the recent roll out of the formal inspection process to over 600 employees throughout the world. Marc Rene is a Software Quality Engineer for GTECH Corporation, a leading global information technology company that provides services to 70% of the world's online lottery market. He is responsible for the definition, collection and evaluation of metrics to analyze product and process quality. In addition, Marc served as the Lead Developer of in-house tools that collect and report defect data. Marc works with the GTECH Software Engineering Process Group and is responsible for the generation of many corporate processes and procedures including the existing Formal Inspection procedure.
