AGENDA: 8:30 - 8:45 - Sign in and Coffee Break 8:45 - 9:00 - Meeting Announcements and Introductions 9:00 - 10:15 - "Using and Interpreting Interaction Terms in Regression" By Bill Simpson, PhD. and Kimball Lewis 10:15 - 10:30 - Coder's Corner (To be announced) 10:30 - 10:50 - Break and Refreshments 10:50 - 12:00 - "Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis: Logit and Probit Models" By James Zeitler ABSTRACTS AND BIOS: 9:00 - 10:15 - "Using and Interpreting Interaction Terms in Regression" By Bill Simpson and Kimball Lewis Abstract: Bill Simpson will start the discussion with some practical theory on interaction terms and their relation to the main effects terms. His discussion will include the appropriate use of interaction terms and interpreting the coefficients. He will also discuss the need for transforming the independent variables before calculating the interaction variable in order to reduce multicollinearity and produce more meaningful coefficient estimates. Finally, he will discuss how to calculate predicted values from a regression and how to use these predicted values to graph interaction terms in order to visualize the interaction term's effect on a model. Kimball Lewis will demonstrate SAS techniques to calculate predicted values and graph interaction terms. Bios: Bill Simpson, PhD, is a Senior Statistician/Analyst at Harvard Business School, where he provides researchers with advanced statistical analyses, consultation services, and research software support. He has been using SAS for over 20 years. Kimball Lewis is a Senior Research Analyst at PharMetrics, Inc., a research and marketing firm for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. He has been using SAS for 9 years. 10:50 - 12:00 - "Introduction to Categorical Data Analysis: Logit and Probit Models" By James Zeitler Abstract: Having a qualitative variable on the left-hand-side of a regression relationship requires the use of a special class of estimation methodologies and some reconsideration of the interpretation of regression coefficients. In this first of two planned sessions, we will discuss binary response models, in which the dependent variable can assume either of two values. This simple model has important practical applications, but it serves as well as an introduction to the more complicated multinomial and ordered response models. Bio: James Zeitler is a Research Database Analyst at Harvard Business School, providing faculty with data and statistical software support.
