Abstract: Staffless SQA: An Effective SQA Alternative Most CMM level-1 organizations identify Software Quality Assurance as the least frequently satisfied level-2 key process area. High turnover and low morale plague SQA staffs, who are often categorized as the ’Police’ and represents a lack of respect from project teams. Sound familiar? EMC investigated alternatives to maintaining a ‘typical SQA’ organization. Have you considered establishing teams focused on: reviewing project deliverables, auditing software work products, and providing management with direct visibility to adherence of established plans and procedures? EMC has done just that! At EMC, we identified and implemented an alternative approach by designing process assurance directly into our project management structure. The SQA responsibility has been transferred to project teams, who provide management with direct project visibility. This eliminates the need to escalate non-compliance issues to management, since senior management is part of the project review function. EMC would like to share its experiences with you – the challenges faced, the lessons learned, and the key improvement metrics identified. EMC’s hope is you will be able to leverage this information and implement a measurement program successfully in their organization. About the Speaker: Unmesh Gundewar is a Consultant for EMC’s Software organization and chairs a company-wide process improvement effort. He works with senior executives to establish standard practices for software development and project management, focusing on key business goals to improve time-to-market, predictability, product quality, and employee satisfaction. He holds a patent on the ProjectModel, “A Simple Approach for Achieving CMM Level 2”. He has published numerous papers and is a frequent speaker at local PMI (Project Management Institute), SPIN chapters, and at PMI and SEI conferences. Gundewar holds a master degree from the University of Florida and he is PMP certified. About the Roundtables: Roundtables are focused group or "birds-of-a-feather" discussions, with a facilitator, to stimulate and moderate discussion. Roundtables are held during the Networking portion of the SPIN meeting from 6:00 to 6:45. Roundtable topics will be announced on our "Reminder" e-mail notification.
