And Retain" By Carter Rakovski ABSTRACTS AND BIOS: "Distributing Reports from SAS via E-mail" By Paul Grant, SAS Institute One of the Version 8 enhancements to Base SAS gives you the ability to send e-mail programmatically from the SAS system. This Coders' Corner presentation will walk you through some very simple SAS code that will distribute a report to a group of recipients via e-mail. Paul Grant is a Systems Engineer at SAS in the Boston regional office. He chaired SUGI 21 in Chicago, 1996 and co-chaired NESUG '94 in Philadelphia. He has been active in the Boston Area SAS Users Group for many years. Paul has been using SAS software in a variety of industries since 1981. "Version 9 Nuts and Bolts" By David Shamlin, SAS Institute What's new in the V9 Release of Base SAS? Plenty of good stuff! We'll quickly review the direction SAS is taking it's core product and briefly (I swear!) look at how the marketing message relates to the technological innovations R&D is putting into the product. But mostly we'll demo, demo, demo!!! A bunch of new tools have been added to the data step, ODS and other parts of Base that make life easier. Not only will we mention as many as we can, we'll show them in action. David Shamlin joined SAS in 1987 as a member of the VMS Host Group, where he helped develop low-level file systems. He also did a tour of duty with the SAS IO development team, becoming a pioneer in industry standard data access interfaces to SAS data stores. David brings these experiences to his current role as research and development director for Base Table Services, where he leads the development of fundamental SAS technology related to the data step, BASE PROCs, the LIBNAME supervisor, data set and catalog IO, SAS/SHARE and other client/server components related to SAS data access. David holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from North Carolina State University. "How to Create Date-based Variables Easily Using First. And Retain" By Carter Rakovski, Bentley College In this presentation, I'll give an example of a common data problem; creating new variables based on the date and time of existing variables. Instead of merging and evaluating date and time variables, we will solve this problem using sort, retain, first., and if/then/else statements. Carter Rakovski is currently a Senior Research Consultant at Bentley College. She assists faculty along the spectrum of the research process, including methodology, sampling, statistical analysis, data procurement, and interpretation of results. She supports faculty in their use of SAS, SPSS, and other statistical software and maintains databases, particularly large, financial data. Prior to this position, she worked as a SAS programmer and data analyst at the Center for Health, Quality, Outcomes and Economic Research, a research center jointly sponsored by the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Bedford, MA and Boston University School of Public Health. She has a Master's in Statistics from UMASS, Amherst and has been SAS programming for 5 years.
