Jim Isaak has some interesting things to tell us about Web page engineering AND a lucky attendee will get a copy of Steve Rakitin's book, Software Verification and Validation, A Practitioner's Guide. I hope to see you there! John Pustaver Director, Software Quality Group of New England Region I Councilor, ASQ Software Division Software Quality Group Meeting Meetings of the Software Quality Group are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the facilities of Sun Microsystems, Burlington (Driving directions below). MEETING DAY & DATE: Wednesday, Sep 12, 2001 TIME: 6:15 PM HEADLINE: Web Page Engineering SPEAKER: Jim Isaak MORE INFO: John Pustaver, 978-443-4254, pustaver@swquality.com LOCATION: Sun Microsystems, Burlington (Driving directions below) DESCRIPTION: A poorly engineered web site can be expensive to maintain, difficult to navigate, and even a legal liability. Building on the work of the Web Consortium and the Internet Engineering Task Force, and drawing on the experience and insight of a wide range of real-world web site developers and web-masters, the IEEE CS Internet Best Practices working group has documented the best practices for web page engineering (IEEE Standard 2001-1999). The current revision (expected 2002 publication) is addressing US Government "Section 508" accessiblity requirements, OECD/EU/Safe Haven Privacy guidelines, as well as expanded ease-of- use and improved site maintainence recommendations. This talk will provide an overview of recommended web page engineering practices that aid in the creation of web sites that are productive and maintainable. Topics include: Design and Life cycle Considerations; Audience and objectives; Client/Server technology, XHTML, CSS, XML -Versions and Variations; Legal Implications (Intellectual Property Rights, Copyright, Trademarks, Proprietary Information); Accessibility -- for disabled persons, privacy; Server, HTTP - performance, metrics, robot exclusion, ease of use; Metadata -- Dublin Core, PICS, Robots, Keywords, bandwidth impact; Dates -expiration/review, Maintenance; International considerations -- language, practical considerations, and legal awareness. James D. Isaak (http://www.JimIsaak.com/) is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and adjunct Professor at Daniel Webster College and New Hampshire Community College (after 30 years in industry with Digital, Charles River, Data General, Intel and IBM). He is currently a candidate for the IEEE Board of Directors, a member of the Computer Society's Board of Governors and has served as Vice President for Standards (1995-1998) and Techinical Activities (1999). He has authored numerous articles on open systems and one on the Information Highway as early as 1978 (Computer, Oct. 1978).
