Karen has been at the forefront of the industry movement toward user-centered product design for 15 years and is recognized worldwide as an expert on customer-centered design. Karen is regularly published and frequently appears as a keynote speaker in Human-Computer Interaction HCI) conferences around the world. She holds a doctorate in applied psychology from the University of Toronto and combines over 20 years professional and university teaching experience with 14 years of computer consulting and engineering experience. Karen invented Contextual Inquiry, and with her partner, Hugh Beyer, formalized the Contextual Design methodology. Their book on Contextual Design is used in universities and by thousands of product designers around the world. Recent InContext projects have included providing customer data and work models to Microsoft to support their website redesign, and product design projects with SAP and i2. In this 1 hour presentation, Karen will give you practical ways to bring an understanding of your customers into your company. She'll discuss how to recognize organizational resistance and explicit ways to counteract it. And she'll give you ideas on how to push your organization into taking the first steps toward user-centered design.
