Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 20:30:23 -0400 From: CarolynBC Subject: [Boston-voice-users] next meeting - Tues., June 12, 7:30 MIT 2-131 Boston Voice Users will present its monthly meeting: Dr. Follansbee "Speech Recognition for Students with Learning Disabilities" Boston Voice Users meeting Tuesday, [June 12, 7:30 - 9:30 pm (corrected date)] MIT, Room 2-131* *NOTE: this is a different room than the one we've been in for a while. (directions below) This talk will the explore the use of speech recognition technology by middle and secondary students with disabilities. While speech recognition is an obvious solution for many individuals who are not able to use the keyboard (e.g., people with spinal cord injuries, repetitive stress injuries, arthritis, etc.), its use as a tool by students with learning disabilities that impact writing is less straightforward. This talk will discuss the specific needs and issues in use of speech recognition for students with disabilities that impact writing. Issues of particular interest will be how discrete vs. continuous speech functionality and differences in interface design address the needs of specific populations. Dr. Follansbee has been involved in the clinical use of speech recognition in education for more than a decade. He is currently a Project Director at Education Development Center, Inc., Newton, MA, where he has led two federally-funded projects on speech recognition and individuals with disabilities. -------------------------------------------- Directions to room: Go in the main door of MIT, at 77 Mass. Ave. Go straight down the Infinite Corridor for as long as you can. When forced to turn, go right. You'll pass one intersection decorated with murals of jungle animals, with a hallway to library on your left, and stairs on your right. 2-131 is further along. For wheelchair access: use the door at 33 Mass Ave, toward the River from the main door. There's a lift there. The Boston Voice Users meets at MIT from 7:30 p.m. until approximately 9:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Please feel free to cross-post this message. _______________________________________________ Boston-voice-users maillist - Boston-voice-users@harvee.billerica.ma.us http://harvee.billerica.ma.us/mailman/listinfo/boston-voice-users
