How do video graphics, computer-animation and web consulting houses work? What are normal business practices, expectations, and problem areas that computer-graphics artists should watch out for? How are jobs budgeted and priced? What are going rates for different types of work? What should a good contract include? What rights does a digital artist retain in work done for hire and what liabilities does he face if it includes other artist's work? How do you collect money from slow payers without burning bridges that might lead to future work? What special implications does the electronic nature of computer artwork bring to the market? Which direction is the industry moving in? We've assembled a panel of experienced computer-graphics professionals from a variety of disciplines to answer these and many other questions! They'll talk about their own practices, experiences and offer guidance on how to join our field. And they'll even take questions after the main presentation! The distinguished panel: (alphabetical order) Brent Coullard is Senior Client Partner for Harrison & Troxell, Inc. Brent has designed and managed the construction of multi-million-dollar websites for Internet Startups as well as Fortune 500 companies and can discuss the nature of the industry from many different viewpoints. Ed Council is the business manager of Lepidoptera Graphics, a boutique graphic design firm specializing in corporate marketing materials. Lepidoptera Graphics. formed in 1991, specializes in graphic design and illustration for marketing, exhibition and presentation. Prior to joining Lepidoptera Graphics in 1995, he ran a software development and consulting company with projects including a GUI based real-time control system. Ed has been in the business since the days when it took an engineering degree (and he has one, too.) to create computer graphics. He as a long perspective on business and economic issues. Michael Creane owns Kiwi Press, which has been growing quickly from two employees to about ten over the last 2 years. He adds the perspective of what it really takes to get a project produced and completed. Doug Gastich is the New Media Director for Cosmic Blender (formerly CF Video), an integrated production company working to 'reach, teach, and sell your brand'. Doug has been working with corporate and educational clients to create engaging media at any bandwidth. He has both in-the-trenches and big picture perspectives on computer, video, and animated graphics for online audiences. Barry Ruff has contracted/consulted/freelanced and been employed doing 3D computer graphics and animation in the Boston area since 1989. He's worked at ViewPoint Studios, TASC, WSI, SynaPix and is currently a technical director in R&D at LifeFX working on photorealistic facial animation. Barry has worked with Alias products since version 2, wrote a book on Softimage|3D and in a former life was the chair of SIGGRAPH Boston. Our moderator: Dana Moser is a professor in the Studio for Interrelated Media at the Mass. College of Art. He brings over a decade of experience teaching digital media art and observation of recent college graduates entering the commercial world. Upon entering the exit ramp, stay in the left lane (Prudential Center) and follow the exit to Huntington Avenue. Follow Huntington Avenue past the Christian Science Center (take underpass), Northeastern University, and the Museum of Fine Arts. Massachusetts College of Art is two blocks after the Museum on the right-hand side of Huntington Avenue. >From Route 9 (traveling from the west): Route 9 becomes Huntington Avenue at the Boston city limit (Brookline Village). Follow Huntington Avenue for approximately a mile. Massachusetts College of Art is located on your left at the intersection of Huntington Avenue and Longwood Avenue. >From Storrow Drive: Take the Copley Square/Back Bay exit and turn right on Beacon Street. Follow Beacon Street to Exeter Street and take a left turn. Follow Exeter Street to Huntington Avenue and take a right Turn. Follow Huntington Avenue to the college. >From Route 3 and I-93: Take Storrow Drive exit from route 93 and follow information to get to the college from Storrow Drive >From Route 1 and I-95 (traveling from the north): Cross the Mystic/Tobin Bridge and follow signs to Storrow Drive. Follow information to get to the college from Storrow Drive. >From Route 3/Route 24/Route128 (traveling from the south): Take Southeast Expressway to Boston, to the Mass Avenue/Roxbury exit. At the end of the exit continue across Massachusetts Avenue, and along Melnea Cass Boulevard, until you arrive at Tremont Street. Turn left on Tremont Street and travel for one block to Ruggles Street. Turn right on Ruggles Street and travel until you arrive at Huntington Avenue.
