Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 09:10:44 -0400 From: Dan Jacobs Subject: WebTech 9/19 7pm XSLT - RSVP Hi everybody, This month's webtech meeting will be on Tuesday, September 19th at the IBM SPC in Waltham. The meeting will feature a presentation by Mark Colan from Lotus on XSL by Example: An Introduction to XML Transformations, starting at 7pm. *** IMPORTANT *** There is a chance that food may be provided, but I need to get an idea of how many people would plan to be there at 6:00 for food before the meeting. Please send me email before Friday letting me know if you are interested in coming for food at 6:00. I'll send out another email on Friday letting everyone know whether or not this is going to happen, and I'll update the website accordingly. Mark Colan is a terrific speaker, and has been a frequent contributor to the WebTech group over the past few years. XSL and XSLT are important new technologies, and I'm really looking forward to Mark's presentation. I hope to see you there. Abstract: This session is a "nuts-and-bolts" introduction to writing stylesheet and transformation scripts used with XSL. The XSLT language is introduced by looking at several transformations and studying how they work (or why they didn't work). You'll learn how XSLT can be used for rendering XML into HTML, performing XML-to-XML vocabulary translations including radical restructuring of data, as well as creating PDF documents from XML data. Attendees will get more out of this session if they know the basic XML syntax; for example, you could read an XML tutorial like http://www.ibm.com/software/developer/education/xmlintro/ to get up to speed. Some useful background on XSL is available in my talk that introduces XSL: The Role of XSL Transformations in e-business solutions, available at http://www.software.ibm.com/developer/library/xsl-transformation.pdf. About the speaker: Mark Colan is an XML Evangelist and Technologist for IBM Corporation. He is also well known as the Lead Architect for the InfoBus Technology (a Java Standard Extension). Mark currently gives presentations on IBM's XML technologies and strategy. With over 24 years experience in designing and implementing commercial software products and technologies, Mark is well versed in component software strategies, operating systems, and software tools. He has spoken at many leading Java and XML industry conferences and events, including JavaOne, the Colorado Software Summit, XTech, SD/West, XML One, XML Europe, XML DevCon, and O'Reilly Java Enterprise; this is also Mark's fifth presentation for ACM WebTech.
