Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 08:54:43 -0400 From: Gail Kahn Subject: June PUF Meeting Announcement Paradox User's Forum Date and Time: Monday, June 5, 6:45 PM Meeting Topic: "Paradox for Linux" by David Gessner, Long Ridge Data, Inc. Description: Linux is a "free" operating system based on UNIX. It was originally developed by Linus Torvalds who is from Finland. He has made his work available to the computing community, where Linux has become a movement. Linux has been successfully used as a LAN and Internet server platform. There are GUI interfaces available for Linux so that it can be used as a personal computer operating system in competition with MS Windows on the Intel platform. Corel has made Linux a major element in their product strategy. They offer Linux installation packages and a WordPerfect Office Suite for Linux. The Corel/Borland merger is, in part, rationalized by the intended creation of a "Linux Powerhouse" through this business combination. Borland is developing Linux versions of Delphi and C++ Builder in a project code named Kylix. Corel has released a Linux version of Paradox for beta testing. This version will be demonstrated at the meeting. Similarities and differences with the MS Windows version will be discussed. Also, there will be a discussion of the various Linux user interface and installation options and Linux networking features. Meeting Location: New Horizons Computer Learning Center, 5 Old Concord Road, Burlington, MA. [Directions: Take Exit 32B on Route 128. Turn Left onto Middlesex Turnpike (proceeding south, away from the Burlington Mall, staying inside Route 128). Turn left at the first light onto Wheeler Road, and left again onto Old Concord Road.
