From: Richard Seltzer Subject: Chat reminder: Thursday, Dec. 7, DEC/Digital Date: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 11:14 AM *** BUSINESS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB -- WHERE WORD OF KEYSTROKE BEGINS *** Please join us this Thursday, December 7 to chat about the fate of DEC/Digital. An editor at Wiley has expressed interest in my proposed book "DEC, not Digital". So I'm rethinking what needs to be said and how. At this point, it looks like the book might falling into two parts: opportunities found and opportunities lost. "Found" might include: timesharing (10s and 20s) PDP-11 (minicomputers) VAX (departmental computing) All-In-1 (office) "Lost" might include: notes PCs (both too late and too early, 3 is less than 1, CP/M, etc.) UNIX Alpha Internet AltaVista How does this feel to you? Am I missing major episodes? My intention is to tell the story from the perspective of the people in the trenches rather than the folks in the board room. If you have suggestions regarding what should and shouldn't be included and/or if you would like me to interview you regarding one or more of these topics, please let me know. Also, please take a look at the intro http://www.samizdat.com/dec.html and my notes about the history of DEC's Internet Business Group at http://www.samizdat.com/ibg.html. Then please look at the reactions and add your comments in the related discussion space at http://webworkzone.com/bootcamp/dispatch.cgi/manual (I'm using SiteScape Forum, the new incarnation of Workgroup Webforum). Please note that we are now holding these chat sessions at a new discussion space hosted by SiteScape.
