From: Colin Godfrey Subject: SIGGRAPH/Boston at RTViz, Concord, Wed. 12 April Date: Thursday, April 06, 2000 8:29 PM SIGGRAPH/Boston Meeting Announcement Site Visit to RTViz in Concord, MA Wednesday 12 April 2000, 6:00pm Abstract VolumePro(tm), the world's first real time volume visualization system for PC-class machines began shipping to customers in May 1999. Mitsubishi's Real Time Visualization business unit (http://www.rtviz.com) of Concord MA designs and sell VolumePro into visualization and research applications across several industries . In this meeting, we will demonstrate VolumePro on a variety of three dimensional data sets. We will then present a short overview of the VolumePro rendering algorithm and discuss real world applications. About the Speaker Hugh Lauer is Chief Technical Officer of Real Time Visualization (RTViz) and one its founders. Hugh was an early member of Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory (MERL) in Cambridge, MA. He was instrumental in spinning off the RTViz business unit from MERL. Prior to Mitsubishi Electric, Hugh worked at Eastman Kodak, Apollo Computer, and Xerox PARC. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1972. About the Company and the Product Real Time Visualization, a business unit of Mitsubishi Electric, operates like an entrepreneurial startup, except for financial support it receives from its parent company. RTViz is anticipated to spin out of Mitsubishi's sole ownership within the next 12 months. The RTViz story began with research on Volume Graphics at MERL under Dr. Sarah Gibson in 1994. After preparation of business and technology plans and promoting them in the US and Japan, development of VolumePro began in earnest in late 1997. In April 1999, the first silicon for VolumePro was fabricated, and a month later VolumePro boards and software began shipping to customers. In July 1999, RTViz outgrew its quarters in the research lab at MERL and re-located to Concord. RTViz customers now include virtually all of the major medical imaging vendors worldwide. Integrators also include dozens of companies who make and sell seismic, scientific, weather, microscopy and industrial imaging applications. RTViz has earned a number of product awards in 1999 for VolumePro, including: * Innovation Award for 1999 - Computer Graphics World, January 2000 issue. (www.cgw.com) * 100 Hot Products 1999 - EDN Magazine (www.ednmag.com) * Top 10 Products in 1999 - Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Japan * EETimes Product of the Week - July 5, 1999 * Finalist in the 1999 EDN Innovation of the Year Award (TBA in April) * Mitsubishi Electric - President's Award When The meeting date is Wednesday 12 April 2000.
