From: John C Shockey To: jshockey@world.std.com Subject: *CAL* MacTechGrp Meeting - April 5, 2000 Date: Friday, March 31, 2000 8:07 AM Straight from the keyboard of our fearless leader, Owen: MacTechGrp Meeting April 5, 2000 7-9PM Room 395 Bldg E51 MIT Sloan School "Fixing what ain't broke" Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software, will be speaking on topics relevant to doing a complete rewrite of a major application from scratch. The topics will include algorithm and architecture decisions that were made, process and procedures that hurt and/or helped the effort, and how he is preparing his product in the shifting world of Apple OS releases. BBEdit began life as a bare-bones text editor but now has been shipping for over 6 years, and now weighs in with 2.5x10^6 lines of code and over 2000 separate source files. Its support of HTML markup, along with extensibility and automation features, have made it a weapon of choice for Web site design and development. Their website is at Rich Siegel is a former recipient of the MacTechGrp's annual "Mac Wizard" award. He founded Bare Bones Software in 1993. In prior lives, he has contributed to the Think/Lightspeed product line, and is a refugee from Carnegie-Mellon University. The Warden promises to let the Mac group gurus out in time for this meeting, so we'll all be there in force to further corrupt the proceedings. The usual suspects will be rounded up for exciting Macintosh jabbering, of the sort you love, and we hope you'll participate. Please bring your whole mind, a quart of jabber, and any Macintosh news, questions, or rumors to MIT building E51 Wednesday night, and let there be dancing in the streets, drinking in the saloons and necking in the parlor. Note: The room number is 395, but we often move to a room with a better projector, so 395 is often just a pointer to our real address. I always write the real room number on the blackboard in 395, so just dereference that. You can get a map showing building E51 at http://whereis.mit.edu/bin/map?oldstate=2&off.x=4620&off.y=1640&hi=bldg_e51 &zoom.x=89&zoom.y=38 You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant (excepting Alice). The MacTechGrp always meets the first Wednesday of the month. Post no bills. You can get more information on the MacTechGrp (and undoubtedly out of date meeting information) at http://www.codewell.com/mactechgrp To contact the unindicted co-conspirators irresponsible for this group, email owen@ids.net or sgs@codewell.com.
